Come sit with me for awhile . . .
and see what I’m bringing to the table ©

‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,’ is one of the most familiar expressions used today.  Shhhh  .   .   .  calm yourselves .  .   .  take a breath people .   .   . I’m not going  there!  No, no lemons today! You do know that I can hear you .   .  . tsk, tsking right! O k, now that all of you are sitting in your comfy chairs, I will get to the point. Yes, yes I know .   .   .   you all have places to go, and people to see.

My neighbor gifted this pot (shown below), bursting with spring sunshine to me the other day, wishing me a happy season to come. Little did my neighbor know just how much  yellow daffodils and daisies, wrap my whole being in a blanket of happiness.

Last year I did an Easter table for six using my happy flower the daffodil with a bit of a twist. Last years write up follows photo

Daffodils and Carrots ?  ?  ?
Carrots, and daffodils are on my agenda this week .   .  .

Why .   .   . you ask? Because spring has sprung out here on the west coast. The month of March has done exactly that… marched on in with all trumpets blaring. Flowers have flourished, vegetables are abundant.

It’s time to celebrate the coming of Spring .   .   . soooooooooo .   .   . I decided to have a small gathering of friends, to help usher in the brilliant bounty that Mother Nature affords us every Spring. Yes, I know Easter is a  few weeks away, however, I decided to give all of you ‘take charge in advance’ types a head start, by showing you what can be done with very little money (carrots and daffodils $3.57), earths amazing bounty, and by stepping out of the box.

As you can see from the above photo .   .    . I am the lucky owner of a most unique pitcher… a pitcher that not only has carrot like feet for the body, but is painted and glazed in amazing life-like carrot and carrot top colors. What better way to celebrate Spring’s abundance, and  give my special beauty center stage .   .   . then to fill it to the brim with carrots and daffodils.

I began with a 1930’s vintage, open work cotton tablecloth. This particular cloth does have some wear issues .   .   . actually truth be told, there are actually a few holes. But .   .   . that never stops me .   .   . no, no no!  .   .   . I then layered a hand embroidered table runner to cover the damaged area .   .   . and VOILA!!!!! all that can be seen is BEAUTY, and ABUNDANCE !!!!! I used white dishes, with vibrant golden yellow napkins, held together with beaded napkin rings in the shapes of .   .   . flowers .   .   . of course! Candles, candles, candles .   .   . never underestimate the power of candlelight!

Everyone says it’s all in the cup size. Oh please .   .  . stay focused people! Yes, yes I hear you tsk-tsking. We are talking different cups here. O k .   .   . take a deep breath .    .   . now slowly let it out. I’ll be here waiting for you all to compose yourselves. May I please proceed now? Thanks.

The espresso cup above has played host to many Italian, Armenian, and Turkish blends served up at the end of some of my hearty dinners. What better way to finish off a gathering of friends, than a touch of dessert, and espresso? Thanks to the person that just said cognac, a smoky port, or one of a list of after dinner liquors. Yes, yes, and yes to all of the aforementioned. I personally have garnered espresso cups in some of the most interesting of places. The one cup below is part of a set, found in a very old hardware store of all places, in the town of La Romana, Dominican Republic. Espresso sets (include saucers) can be had for pennies or many dollars if you are so inclined.

My friend and I meet for lunch every couple of weeks so as to stay connected to each others lives, while trying new restaurants. So having lunched, caught up, and laughed a whole lot, it was time to order our absolute must-have yummy frothy, hot cappuccinos. As with any new restaurant, interpretation is always up for grabs. Well, well, well .   .   . what a super surprise (as caught by my iPhone) .   .   . these very thick old fashioned soda-like glasses arrived with the most delicious, hot, frothy and yummy cappuccinos. When I think I’ve seen all that is out there .   .   . life has a way of throwing a few new twists my way.

“Baby, it’s cold outside” are the beginning lyrics to the very well known recording by Louis Armstrong, and Velma Middleton, and has become a mantra for many of us!!! Whether it’s cold, raining, snowing, and/or storming, a steaming bowl of soup always saves the day! Contain yourselves, I am getting to the point. Sheesh!

Yes, of course I know some of you live in a more gentler climate among waving palm trees, while listening to the voice of the ocean rhythmically crashing against the rocky shoreline. Hmmm. Or perhaps you’ve opted for an even more gentler way of life, as the Caribbean laps gently toward the glistening silky sand. Ahhhhhh. Either way.  .   . I’ve got you covered .   .   .  hot or cold .   .   . casual, or maybe not-so casual .   .   . it has to be served in something .   .   . right?  For the got to curl-up in your sweats, or jammies   check out the above photo, with colorful bowls, or maybe a large warm-your-hands mug for the purrrfect tuck-in stormy night .   .   . but .   .   .Now take that same soup and serve it out of a cool-looking soup tureen, with white bowls (see below) that will really show off your culinary talent, add flattering candlelight,  and take a bow. Some of you just mumbled that you are not part of ‘the scratch chefs club‘.   .   . yes, yes I heard you. Oh please .   .   .  you can still be the hostess/host with the mostest  .   .   . just empty the store-bought, heat, and take a bow. Presentation, hot food, and warm company is the name of the game on a tuck-in kind of night!

GO FOR THE EXTRA POINT .   .    .

th-1

For those of you that are distancing due to Covid-19 take heart !!! My solution is simple… Just pare it down to fit your ‘people bubble’.

Rooting for your favorite football team can really be exhausting! Super Bowl Sunday, February 7th is ‘THE’ day to let it rip! That’s to say .   .   . screaming, hooting and hollering, and boasting are not only allowed .   .   . but encouraged!!!  Of course with all of this expended energy comes the need for sustenance. Enter ‘Tableofferings’ with a couple of sure fire fixes. O k .   .   . so I put the cart before the horse and showed you my absolute CAN NOT MISS yummies first. Can you blame me? Of course not. Lol!!! The beauties above are sooo easy to put together. Really. Just bring in three, four or more tried and true ice cream flavors, ice cream scoops, bowls of assorted toppings and long handle spoons. Mmmmmmm.

FOR A TOUCHDOWN .   .   . go with the tried and true!  The gigantic sub sandwhich below is filled with everything but the kitchen sink and makes a greeeeat statement. Fill up a tub with ice, beer and juice. I don’t know about the upcoming games final score .   .   . but what I do know is that these two food groups are always a TOUCHDOWN!!!!

FORTUNE and  PERSONALITY

The year of the OX

Loyal,  honest, responsible, hard-working , logical, trustworthy. And the negatives?  Hmmm .   .   . I say we stick with the positives!!!! Why? Because I personally think we all have had enough negatives for the time being.  Having said that,  I have appointed myself ambassador of joy, happiness, and above all else calm!

Who doesn’t love a table for two in front of the fireplace??? White pillows, pillows and more pillows makes this setting for two the perfect place to ring in the Chinese New Year. Using my everyday dishes layered with green (good luck color) vintage glass plates perfect for appetizers. Napkins of spun shimmering silver linen, mixed with red here there and everywhere prosperity. For extra sparkle I added a heavily encrusted  beaded tassel.

IMG_6508

As for the food whole chicken, whole fish, dumplings to look like gold or silver pieces representing being prosperous. braised shitaki mushrooms, don’t forget tangerines and oranges, longevity noodles representing one long strand , jujube , a common ingredient in asian food as well a red being seen throughout representing prosperity and happiness, spring rolls symbolizing wealth as in “a ton of gold” likened to gold bars. Yes, yes I understand that there will only be two! Portions will be scaled down to a minor feeding fest.

The once mundane .  .  .have one (or more) at the ol’ ball game .  .  . has now stepped into the spotlight .  .  .  in a very big way. Move over martinis .   .   .

No longer the poor mans champagne, the new boutique beers, also known as craft beers now enjoy very extensive bills of fare, in bars, liquor stores, and higher end restaurants. The new hip drink of choice in many restaurants now share and in some cases exceed the printed menu space originally reserved for wine selections. The microbrews, also known as craft  and/or boutique beers that are being touted are comprised of  limited editions, and are viewed with as much reverence as a rare bottle of wine culled from a limited crop of rare grapes.

Having said all of this .  .  .  Not all microbrews are equal .   .    . and .   .  . should not be treated as equals .   .   . positively not !!!

The point of this column is not to highlight designer beers per se .  .  . but how they should be served, and in which glass .  .  . Now I know the beer drinker reading this column is saying .   .   . who cares what glass I get it in as long as it’s cold, or just give me the bottle! Well, I’m here to tell you .   .   . No No No .   .   . you are sooooo wrong!  Seriously wrong …

A few of the dozen or so vessels readily available are Handled Steins, Pilsner Glass, French Jelly Glasses, American Shaker Pint, Irish Imperial Pint, and Schooners. Of the many vessels available is the Pilsner glass (pictured above*), and also the most widely used and easiest to find.

*Nope .   .   . the photo isn’t a mistake .   .  . an orange slice… instead of the everyday, been done a gazillion times before, with a piece of lemon .   .   . try it,  you just might like it.

OK so you’ve selected your beer(s), and glass(es) … now comes THE most important part  .   .   . it’s got to be COLD, I mean ICE COLD!

Here’s my COLD formula… I wet my beer glasses (regardless of style) and put them in the freezer for a couple of hours. Beer should be stored in the coldest part of your refrigerator, for a few hours before serving. When serving outside, keep ice cold beer in an ice filled chest once it comes out of the freezer, or refrigerator.  To keep extra glasses ice cold, stand them upside-down in the ice.

Over the years the lyrics .   .   .  a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck, clearly sent, and still probably does send messages of love to all who have heard and sang this song over the years. Where as ‘my bushel’ seen below, is clearly sending thoughts of hearth, home, welcome to my table, and I love having you.I can not think of a better way to celebrate fall than with a bushel brimming with leaves, gourds, colorful Indian corn, and pears .   .   . lots and lots of pears. Pears of all sizes, shapes, and colors, fresh as well as faux, all blended with a wreath bursting with grapes, leaves, and golden pumpkins.

IMG_8515

For the settings featured below, my first layer is my favorite hand painted dinner plate of harvest fruit in wonderful rich tones. Next layer is a square plate with a branch/leaf pattern, topped off with a square burnt orange plate, and a wonderful hand thrown earthenware colored teal bowl.  To really perk up this table I introduced a vivid green earthenware glass, and two different napkins, one of earth gold color and the other a happy yellow, layered together. All of you who have been reading about my tablescaping escapades know that I am not done until the last itty-bitty sparkle has been added and all of the tons of candles lit! .   .   .   DONE!!!

The key to an enchanted evening  .   .   .

IMG_7449 (1)

begins with family, friends, flickering flames, and twinkling lights. Mini-lights safely tucked within silver mesh ribbons (battery operated), remain perfectly poised for the much awaited striking of a match, and the flip of a switch. In the above photo, a vintage white-on-white table linen, blends with a stunning Grecian patterned napkin. Butttt .   .   . I chose to use it as a place mat, which added some drama to alternating settings. The alternated settings are designated in silver place mats, aka napkins. To  further create interest, I used linen pearl edged cocktail napkins, gathered around the stem of wine glasses, then tied with silver tassels.Did someone just ask me why? (giggle, giggle)  Because I can! I LOVE stepping out-of-the-box .   .   . you know .   .   . to get a breath of fresh air!!! Phew!

Hmmm .   .   . for this centerpiece?  I put my ‘fav’ glass dome that   resembles a bell to work. I laid the dome on its side, and filled it with vintage silk covered white balls, large gold edged mother of pearl drops, that sits regally on top of lightly snow dusted pine tree branches.Throw in large and small pines cones, also touched by a flurry of snow, and voilà! Ooooppps .   .   . I almost forgot to tell you, that I added multiple strands of faux pearls with  gold trim, and just a smattering of all gold strands.

The photo below gives you a birds eye view of this centerpiece .   .   . hmmm .   .   . Lol, I was wondering when you where going to notice the lack of actual tableware .   .   . Ahhh .  .   . now you get to fill in the missing blanks and email sharons3@me.com with your input. I’ll be anxiously waiting for your choice of dishes, flatware, and any other goodies you wish to add.

“It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness” Eleanor Roosevelt. True .   .   . but I say .   .   . one candle is never enough!!! Liken the quantity of candles you ultimately chose for your tablescape, or room, to the story of The Three Bears. People, come on .   .   . I know you all remember how one was too small .   .   . the next one was wayyyyy too big .   .   . and then.   .   . ahh .   .   . the last one was just right?  The photo below showing a portion of the thirty two (32) assorted heights and sizes of candles used on this tablescape. Mm hmm .   .   . you read it correctly .   .   . a mix of thirty two (32) white and shell white tapers, silver pillars bejeweled w/Swarovski crystals, silver finished potted candles, and glass mottled gold and silver votives. To give the taller flames a place to bedazzle the eye, I added gorgeous crystal strands that hang from the chandelier that I found in an antique mall for pennies. Lucky find! The lower potted candles, and votives are perfect to show-off the spectacular ‘dance of the shimmering flame’ reflecting off of the various heights of crystal stemware and candle holders.

img_6993

The photo below gives you a good view of eight place settings on a white purposely crumpled looking linen cloth. Why on earth use a crumpled cloth you ask? Because it is my interpretation of a winter wonderland blended with pops of silver and gold throughout this table. I alternated gold and silver chargers, and stacked them with vintage Royal Dalton china (French Provincial pattern). Topping off with alternating white-on-white, and green-on-green napkins, are green glass pedestal dishes, finished off with clusters of clear or green glass grapes for that extra bling. The silverware is vintage Reed and Barton Diamond pattern. Silver tassels cradle the base of some of the candle holders, but not all. People .   .   . a parting word .   .   . if all of a sudden you find yourself going for the matchy-matchy all around .   .   . take a break .   .   .  come to your creative senses !!!img_6999
